Portokalopita - Greek Orange Filo Cake

Orange cake with baked pastry and yoghurt. Juicy and fluffy, with a strong flavor of orange and syrupy as much as required to keep it juicy without cloying us. The crunching sheets are sprinkled and flavoured with cinnamon and sugar. The candied orange slices tantalise your enjoyment and further intensify the orange flavor.

Ingredients (10 servings)

  • 500 gr (1.1 lbs) pastry sheets (12 sheets)
  • 80 gr (2.8 oz) melted butter
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 180 gr (6.3 oz) sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 180 gr (6.3 oz) light oil
  • 1 sachet (20 gr-0.71 oz) baking powder
  • 330 gr (11.6 oz) strained yophurt
  • 2 tbsp orange liquer
  • 2 oranges, zest
Butter well an oven pot of dimensions ~25×33cm (10 in×1ft)
Mix a little sugar with the cinnamon.
Divide half the sheets and spread onto the workbench. Butter one by one and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. The strain from the short side, like accordion…
…and place them in the pan along and loose.
Keep on till you strained all 6 sheets.
Bake in preheated oven for 12'-15'…
…until lightly browned.
In a large bowl add the sugar and eggs and whisk vigorously until the mixture becomes white and inflate.
Add the oil little by little…
…the baking powder, yogurt, liqueur and zest of oranges. Stir to homogenize the mixture.
With a scissors cut into small pieces the other sheets one to one and incorporate the mixture of yogurt.
Pour the mixture onto the bowl from the baked sheets.
Bake in oven at 180°C (356°F, Gas 4.2) for ~35'-40', until well browned and baked underneath.


  • 250 gr (8.8 oz) sugar
  • 250 gr (8.8 oz) water
  • 2 oranges, juice
  • little orange peel
Boil the syrup ingredients for 4'-5' and after you take the orange cake from the oven and have it cooled enough, pour the warm syrup.

Candied orange slices

Wash and chop the orange with the peel, into round slices not too thin. Remove the seeds and put them in a small saucepan with water to cover them lightly with sugar 60 gr (2.1 oz). Boil until reduced syrup and the orange is caramelized.
